Sanitation and Water for All (SWA) works with partners from six constituencies. While governments have primary responsibility for delivering on the Sustainable Development Goal 6, mobilizing resources and developing innovative solutions that leave no one behind; they are also required to concert effort with all stakeholders in the society, private sector included.
The Private Sector Constituency represents large corporations, small and medium enterprises, public-private partnerships. professionals, for-profit businesses or networks representing business interests with recognized commitment, influence, and a global and/or regional remit that works in support of the SWA’s Objectives.
All private sector organizations are encouraged to join SWA partner networks or connect to existing multi-stakeholder platforms at the national, regional or global level.
What is the role of the private sector within SWA?
The Private Sector Constituency (PSC) represents the private sector’s voice in the global water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) sector. The Constituency assumes high importance, both in influencing the global WASH agenda and addressing challenges through concrete and innovative solutions at the national level. Amongst others, the PSC:
- Promotes service delivery alternatives such as public-private partnerships;
- Attract private sector capital and other new and innovative forms and sources of investments;
- Seek to improve the efficiency and impact of sector operations relevant to water, sanitation and hygiene;
- Accelerate the uptake of further innovation in the sector.
How is the Private Sector Constituency represented within SWA?
Two Private Sector Representatives form part of the SWA Steering Committee, which is the SWA decision-making body.
At the national level, the Private Sector Constituency is supported by Private Sector focal points (main and alternate), responsible for liaising with government, partners from other constituencies, and other entities from the private sector in the country, to deliver on the SWA framework and objectives.
All Private Sector focal points can be found on the dedicated country pages.
