South Africa

South Africa joined SWA in 2010. The government has established an SDG Steering Committee, which coordinated action and monitoring of SDG6. Regular Status Quo Reports are release, together with Action Plans per Goal and details on funding requirements. In terms of the WASH sector, the Medium-Term Strategic Framework MTSF 2019–2024 focuses on municipalities who are capable of becoming economic hubs, in additional to addressing remaining service delivery issues in District Municipalities. The greatest challenge continues to be the rate of urbanisation in urban centres and the associated lack of bulk infrastructure and overloading of existing bulk services.
