Mozambique joined the SWA partnership in 2011. Through multi-stakeholder and government led processes, government of Mozambique developed a Water Supply and Sanitation Sector Implementation plan for sustainable Development Goals. The priority on this roadmap is the eradication of open defecation by 2025, as well universal access to safe sanitation by 2030. In addition to the plan, Mozambique further developed the Rural Sanitation Strategy so that through decentralized actions and local leadership, sanitation coverage acceleration is implemented. On sector financing, Mozambique is currently developing a mechanism for innovative financing.
