Maldives joined SWA in 2010. The Government of Maldives committed to achieve the UN SDG goal 6. The government also committed to provide access to pipe water supply and pipe sewage services in all the 187 inner islands in the Maldives by 2023. 68% of the population has access to pipe-water supply and 79% of population has access to pipe sewage facilities. The government will be investing app. US 320 million USD by 2023 to provide water and sanitation for all Maldivians in all 187 islands that people are living. The new budget, the planned budged aims to initiate water and sanitation projects in all of the remaining islands where water and sanitation facilities have not been established and does not have ongoing projects. To ensure sustainable development of the effective regulation of the WASH sector, a water sewerage act was elected to provide legal framework to regulate and govern the water and sanitation sector in the country, and to encourage the private investment in the sector.
Commitments by the government
The government’s pledge towards water and sewerage is to provide clean drinking water and adequate sewerage facilities in the island by the end of the five-year term. These services will be provided to all inhabited islands on an equal basis, irrespective of the size of population.
Commitments by partners
Obtain commitment of 10 CSOs and support of Development Partners for accountability on SDG 6 implementation & progress.
Develop awareness program to advocate for stronger monitoring of SDG 6 and the involvement of CSOs in GLAAS and JMP report.
Work towards establishment of a help desk on improving access to water and sanitation in the Maldives. Work to establish Citizens Report Card on water and sanitation access, water safety, water security.
Collaborate with other CSOs to adopt the CSO SDG6 Strategy developed in 2018 led by WATERCARE.
Widely disseminate information among sectoral and non-sectoral stakeholders on achieving SDG6 by 2030.
