Open letter from SWA partners to the new UN Special Rapporteur on the Human Rights to Water and Sanitation

Sanitation and Water for All Secretariat
28 Oct 2020

Welcome to the new UN Special Rapporteur on the

Human Rights to Water and Sanitation

The 300 partners of the Sanitation and Water for All (SWA) global partnership are happy to congratulate you on your appointment as the United Nation’s Special Rapporteur on the Human Rights to Water and Sanitation.

We are looking forward to working with you to support your mandate, as we continue SWA’s work towards eliminating inequalities in realizing the human rights to water and sanitation through multi-stakeholder collaboration, with a view towards enhanced participation, transparency, and accountability.

As you know, there are far too many people who lack access to essential services, including water, sanitation and hygiene. SWA works to increase political will and financial prioritization for these services, in order to improve access for all without discrimination.

COVID-19 has made our mission even more urgent. It is troubling that it may have taken a global pandemic to raise the world’s awareness of the importance of water, sanitation and hygiene.

The SWA partners are committed to making the best of a bad situation and, together with you, we hope to use this momentum to push the sector forward to eliminate inequalities, ensure multi-stakeholder engagement, participation, transparency, and accountability. We look forward to working closely with you as you undertake your mandate, and we welcome your vision and guidance towards our mutual objective – sanitation and water for all.
